You have a right to be! There is an ever-growing number of our children that are being diagnosed with ADHD, Autistic Spectrum Disorders and Dyslexia. The latest statistics say that 1 in 10 have the diagnosis of ADHD.

With good reason! There are a variety of different treatments available for ADHD and ASD, but they all focus on treating these difficult symptoms associated with the condition and NOT addressing the cause. For starters – understand that there is a Neurologic (Brain) component and a Metabolic (Body) component to these conditions.

You bet! There are currently 4.5 M children diagnosed with ADHD, 2.5 M are currently taking Ritalin. The average monthly out-of-pocket cost for Ritalin is ~$96 per month FOR LIFE. Do the math. That is a $2.88 Billion a year industry. (This is just from the out-of-pocket costs and does not include the insurance’s portion.)

What parent isn’t concerned about decisions that they are making now and the impact they may have on their child’s future. A child with social, developmental, learning problems now will grow to become an adult with the same problems – this is not something that is outgrown. Consider the ability of an adult with ADHD to hold down a decent job, finish secondary education, maintain a healthy relationship or marriage. It is frightening.

I would be! The current preferred treatment for these problems is medication. In a study funded by the FDA, researchers found a 500% increase in the risk of SUDDEN DEATH in kids who took drugs like RITALIN. What parent would knowingly do this to their child? Most (if not all) of these problems have a metabolic AND neurologic component to it. You cannot drug your child out of a metabolic problem!

You shouldn’t be…not yet! In our clinic we Treat the Child NOT the diagnosis!!! …and it makes all the difference in the world.

————————————

Something that happens to me a lot—and it breaks my heart—is someone comes in and says “I wish I had found you ten years ago.”

I don’t want to hear that anymore. As a father of a child with ADHD tendencies, I know what it is like to feel confused about what to do, frustrated because I don’t want to medicate, yet a little helpless as to which is the right direction to take. After all, decisions that I make now can affect my child for the rest of his/her life. (Ever feel like you might be screwing up your child’s future?) I want to help your child (and you) improve. I really want you to understand all of your options.

I do things differently.

I truly look at you as a whole person. You may have symptoms such as numbness in your arm or dizziness, fatigue, or low thyroid. Of course I’m going to explore those specific symptoms. But…I learned a long time ago that if get too focused on your symptoms or your label, then I miss the big picture.

And the big picture is Everything Is Connected…Brain…Hormones…Blood….Immune System….It all matters.

For example, your brain needs to things to be healthy:

1. Fuel…what goes in your mouth and what you breathe and absorb

2. Activation…your brain needs to be stimulated and exercised

Hormones and the Immune System dramatically affect the brain’s fuel supply…AND….a weak brain causes unbalanced hormones and immune system function.

That’s what I look at. I’m going to take a comprehensive look at YOUR CHILD.

It doesn’t matter if you (or your child) have low thyroid, vertigo, neuropathy or autism..

I’m going to examine you neurologically—the health and function of your brain and nervous system.

And, I am going to look at you chemically—what’s going on inside you in terms of immune sytem, nutrition, hormones, vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

Why do I do all this?

Because that’s how to get the best results. And to be brutally honest with you, that’s why I get my patients great results as fast as I do–when no one else has been able to help.

I’m looking for the right things.

I don’t care what your diagnosis is. I don’t care what name it’s been given—if your problem even has a name. I don’t care what other doctors have told you about what’s possible for your condition or what drugs you’ve taken…this is the place for you if you want to treat your Child and NOT his/her diagnosis.

—————————————

Is my child a candidate for Dr. Erickson’s treatments?

Not all patients will be accepted into our program. Dr. Erickson will make a determination of treatment acceptance after an initial evaluation.

Are your treatments safe?

Yes, extremely safe and painless.

I go to a chiropractor now, what is the difference?

Dr. Erickson’s approach includes chiropractic, but his extended education also allows him to look at health issues from a neurological, metabolic, and laboratory view. Children with developmental setbacks, commonly have neurological needs that aren’t met with traditional medical and traditional chiropractic care. It is precisely this expanded view that allows him to get results where others have not.

Will my child need to change his/her lifestyle to get better?

I t is very probable that your child AND you will need to make adjustments to your current lifestyle – particularly if they are contributing to your child’s health situation. If your child is a candidate for care, Dr. Erickson will discuss with you what changes need to be made with your child’s lifestyle AND yours to optimize your child’s results.

Do I need to stop taking my medications?

Please be advised that Dr. Erickson will never tell you to stop taking your medications. That’s called practicing medicine without a license. As your symptoms improve during the course of care, Dr. Erickson will recommend that you return to your physician to adjust medication levels.

Will my insurance cover the treatments?

As with most alternative care, there is usually limited insurance coverage. Our office will print off a service sheet that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. In matters of health, it is best to be prepared to pay out-of-pocket. *If insurance comes through, considerate it a bonus.

How much do your treatments costs?

It varies due to individual patient findings. After a thorough review of your child’s case, Dr. Erickson will determine the course of care for your child’s specific case.

Do I need to go outside of the office for labwork?

We have contracted with local labs to perform the necessary tests. Some labs are test kits that are sent home with you to perform with your child and drop in the mail. Getting the necessary lab work done is efficient and convenient in our office.

I have read through your website and watched the videos and like your approach. How do I become a patient?

The first step is to set up an appointment to visit with Dr. Erickson. He will review your case for appropriateness, and let you know if he will accept your child as a patient.

Is there work that I can do at home to help my child?

Yes. In addition to recommended therapies in the office, you will be expected to work with your child on a regular basis at home.

For Your Information!

This page has been developed to discuss various aspects of Autistic Spectrum Disorders or ASD. ASD includes diagnoses such as ADHD, ADD, Autism, Asperger’s and Dyslexia. I bring this to you both as a concerned parent and determined physician.

Autistic Spectrum Disorders

ADHD, ADD, Autism, Asperger’s and Dyslexia are all varying degrees of a spectrum of disorders called “Autistic Spectrum Disorders” or ASD. Many doctors treat them as behavior problems, when in fact they are neurological problems.

The Neurology of ASD

The brain is often considered to be one large organ when in reality it has many parts or areas the perform specific functions. Many brain functions can be traced to an area and even one side of the brain. Below are some common ones relating to the right and left sides of the brain.

The Left Brain operates like a Gas Pedal and the Right Brain like the Brakes. Remember that many ASD are associated with a decreased RIGHT brain function.
What do you think would happen or how do you think someone would behave if the gas is pressed and there are no brakes to slow or stop?

Right Frontal Lobe Problems:

Not sociable

Can’t stay focused

Loss of math reasoning

Does the same thing over and over

Slouch a lot

Likes routine, not change

Likes to play alone

Lack of response to others

Uneven motor skills (clumsy)

Acts compulsively

Fearful and anxious

Blurts out thoughts

What Has Brought Us Here?

There is an interesting correlation between an increase surge of cases reported and the doubling of vaccinations in America in 1991.

In 1991 the US doubled vaccinations:

7000% increase in Autism

400% increase in ADHD

400% increase in ADD

400% increase in allergies

1980 — 1 diagnosed case for every 160 born

2000 — 1 child diagnosed for every 150 born

2009 — 1 child diagnosed for every 91 born

In 2010 it was reported that 1 in 10 US children is diagnosed with ADHD; a significant increase over previous years.

Something is NOT working.

Traditional Medical Approach

There are a variety of different approaches that are currently being used in the Medical world.

DRUGS. These DO NOT Fix the Child. They cover up symptoms and can have serious risks. There is a 500% chance of Sudden Death with Ritalin consumption.

PHYSICAL THERAPY. This works the muscles of the body, but instead of working the deficient side of the brain it works both sides.

BEHAVIORAL MANAGEMENT THERAPY. This is right and left brain therapy.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY. This is right and left brain specific work.

SPEECH THERAPY. Again, right and left brain therapy.

A child with a right or a left brain problem needs to have specific work done. All of the above therapies work both sides of the brain. Instead of just stimulating the deficient side with the goal of restoring balance, both sides are stimulated which continues the imbalance.

This is like pouring gas on a fire while simultaneously trying to put it out with a water hose.

Our Approach

Refer to the “Why We’re Different” page for more detailed information. CLICK HERE

Many ASD problems are due to Right Brain issues. Specific therapies can successfully stimulate and rehabilitate the Right Brain and proved a better balance between the two sides of the brain. There are times when the Left Brain can be the side that needs rehabilitation – careful evaluation can determine this and Left Brain specific activities can be used to restore balance.

Some of our nuero-therapies may include: balance beam exercises, Interactive Metronome, eye exercises, arm movements, leg movements, coordination exercises, vibration, core muscle therapies, regular metronome activities, balance ball exercises, etc.

The target is the stimulation of the deficient brain side to help restore brain or Neuro balance.

—————————————————-

ADHD

Many doctors treat ADD and ADHD as a behavioral problem. In fact, ADD/ADHD is a neurological problem affecting mainly the cerebellum, thalamus and frontal lobe.

Medications are only a temporary solution because they do not address the root cause of ADHD. The root cause is an electrical imbalance between the right and left sides of the brain. This imbalances called a “Functional Disconnection Syndrome.”

Your child needs to be properly treated without drugs so that he/she doesn’t grow up to become an adult suffering with the same focus and concentration problems… adults who can’t keep a steady job, can’t maintain healthy relationships and fall victim to addictions.

Autism

98% of children on the Autistic Spectrum are suffering from a problem with the right side of the brain.
The causes of Autism are extraordinarily complex:

Toxic chemicals

Heavy metals

Gluten, casein and soy intolerance

Yeast (candida)

Leaky gut barrier

Leaky blood brain barrier

Immune System Imbalance (autoimmune, deficiency)

Genetics

Neuroinflammation

Functional Disconnection Syndrome

All of them must be investigated if your child is ever going to be social, or live an independent, productive life.

Too many well-intentioned doctors and therapists don’t understand this BIG picture..that each child is unique. One-size-fits-all cookie cutter programs are doomed to fail for at least 50% of children.

This is why Dr. Erickson believes: “Treat the Child, Not Their Diagnosis”

Dyslexia & Learning Disabilities

Sadly, there is still a stigma about being a “slow reader” or being put in “a special class.” No parent wants their child to be forced to carry around one of these labels.

To give your child a fighting chance to read and learn normally, you need understand two things…

1. Dyslexia is not just switching letters or a phonics problem. If it was, then phonics would work for every child—but it doesn’t.

2. Difficulties with math, reading and spelling are commonly caused by dysfunction in specific areas in the left hemisphere of the brain.

Visual processing, sound processing, memory and processing speed are all compromised when the left hemisphere of the brain is not functioning properly.

————————————

Ritalin

Ritalin is a common amphetamine stimulant drug prescribed to children by psychiatrists for the treatment of ADHD. On the street, these drugs are know as “speed” yet they are prescribed to young children to help them settle down and focus.

In a study funded by the FDA, researchers found a 500% increase in the risk of sudden death in kids who took drugs like Ritalin. And it’s not just a risk either. Kids like Matthew Hohmann who suddenly collapsed and died in 2004 who was taking these amphetamine stimulant drugs.

So, what does the FDA say about this? They claim that the “benefits are worth the risks” and continue to allow children all across the nation to take these hard drugs.

SSRIs Prescribed for Autistic Children Make Them Worse
· by S. L. Baker, features writer

In the past decade, prescriptions for Ritalin, a stimulant medication commonly used for attention deficit hyperactivity disorders(AD-HD), increased five-fold, with 90% of all prescriptions worldwide consumed in the United States. As many parents grow leery of the traditional medical approach to AD-HD, functional neurology, such as used at The Health and Wellness Center, are offering promising results with non drug treatments that focus on postural muscles, nutrition and lifestyle changes that affect brain activity.

Our philosophy at The Health and Wellness Center is to:

Treat the Child and Not the Label

and

You CANNOT Drug a Child out of a Metabolic and/or Neurologic Disorder!

Many children simply have difficulty learning certain subjects, but the current system – in a sense – prompts school officials to encourage their parents to have the children diagnosed with AD-HD, says Dr. Scott Bautch, past president of the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) Council on Occupational Health. “The higher the number of disabled kids in the school, the more funding the school can apply for”, says Dr. Bautch.

Some teachers might also have difficulty with students who have a different style of learning, according to Dr. Bautch. If the child is visual learner and the teacher is not perhaps the child is not being taught in a way he or she can learn. Before diagnosing the child with AD-HD, Dr. Bautch recommends doctors talk to the child and the parents. “Is the child to active? Bored? Has dyslexia or a different learning pattern? It can be a behavior problem, problems at home, or frustrations with the teacher’s style,” explains Dr. Bautch. “If we went to a conference where the speakers taught in a way we can’t learn,we would be frustrated and would misbehave-we’d get up and leave or chat to the person sitting next to us.”

The traditional medical model, however, seems to follow the cookie-cutter principle. The diagnosis of AD-HD is based on a questionnaire. But this is not enough, says Dr. Robert Melillo, chiropractic neurologist. True AD-HD patients have other signs – tics, tremors, balance or postural problems,or unusual sensitivity to touch, movement, sights, sounds.” Unfortunately, although medications can keep AD-HD under control, they don’t cure it. Of the children suffering from AD-DH, 80% will have AD-DH features in adolescence, and 65% maintain them in adulthood.

Chiropractic Neurologist offer a non-drug and non-invasive treatment for AD-HD patients that targets the underlying problem, not the symptoms. “Motor activity, especially development of the postural muscles, is the baseline function of the brain. Anything affecting postural muscles(child not able to hold up his or her head, rolling over to soon or to late, crawling or walking to soon or to late is a good example) all will influence brain develop. Musculoskeletal imbalance will create imbalance of brain activity, and one part of the brain will develop faster then the other, and that’s what’s happening with AD-DH patients,” says Dr. Melillo.

Chiropractic neurologist are trained to identify the under-functioning part of the brain and find treatments to correct the problem, to help that hemisphere grow. “On every patient, we perform a BRAIN FUNCTION EXAM,” says Dr. Fred Carrick, president of the ACA Council on Neurology. “We test visual and auditory reflexes through, for example flashing light in the eye, or asking patients to listen to music in one ear or the other.”

When the problem is identified, patients are placed on a treatment program-most of the therapies can be done at home.” Patients are ask to smell curtain things several time a day … or wear special glasses. We also focus on their individual problems. Some children, for example, have difficulty with planning, organization, and coordination- so the benefit form timing therapies. They can learn to clap or tap to the interactive metronome (see tab on “Why We’re Different” for information on the Interactive Metronome, perform spinning and balancing exercises.

Although currently no studies comparing chiropractic neurological and medical treatments for AD-HD are available, chiropractic neurologist are compiling the data. We test children before they start the treatment and then every three months. Within the the first three months it is typical for a child to get a two grade improvement on average- which is pretty dramatic. With children on medications, the improvement is academic performances is short term and lasts only as long as they take the medication. Our programs, at The Health and Wellness Center, change the brain function and the improvement doesn’t go away.

If you or a loved one is diagnosed with AD-HD or has the symptoms call our office to receive a FREE Consultation with Dr. Erickson on what the benefits of a Neurological and Metabolic approach could do for your child. Call today at 303-758-0380
